In a word, wow – Kalanchoe humilis ‘Desert Surprise’ features oval leaves with a seafoam green base coloration, offset by zebra-like stripes of rich maroon. The margins of each leaf are irregularly rounded, which only adds to the effect of the striping – not to mention the unique growth pattern in which pairs of leaves emerge together, sometimes in duos or trios, from the center of the plant.
While its exotic appearance may suggest otherwise, ‘Desert Surprise’ is actually quite easy to care. Bright light is a must, though take care to protect the plant from the most intense afternoon sun – especially during the summer months – to avoid sunburn on the leaves. With typical water needs for a succulent, ‘Desert Surprise’ prefers to dry out completely between thorough waterings, while a porous soil mixture within a well-draining pot will ensure that no excess moisture begins to accumulate.
During the summer months, expect small purple or green flowers to appear on foot-long blooms stalks, adding yet another layer to ‘Desert Surprise’s intriguing aesthetic. During the winter, however, be even more cautious about overwatering, and shield the fleshy leaves of this variety from freezing temperatures.
